Trevallyn Dam's Energy Infrastructure Lifespan Doubled

A critical piece of infrastructure at the Trevallyn Dam has been upgrading, doubling its lifespan and futureproofing the work of the power station.

Minister for Energy and Renewables, Nick Duigan, said the trash screen is a giant sieve that sits over the intake opening to stop big rocks, logs and tree branches entering the power station.

"The trash screen prevents damage to the power station by protecting this critical asset from debris," Minister Duigan said.
"The new screen measures 14 metres high, and 12 metres wide, was installed in eight pieces.
"We have doubled the expected life of the trash screen, helping to ensure the safe operation of Trevallyn power station for the next 40 years.
"This increase of 20 years is due to a new protective paint system on the new trash screen's steel, substantially improving its durability.

"We are delivering for Tasmania, with this critical infrastructure upgrade helping to secure the State's power assets."

Installing the new trash screen was no easy feat, with a number of local businesses involved.

"A specialist diving team from Tasmanian Divers Group removed the old trash screen and installed the new one," Minister Duigan said.
"A crane lowered the screen pieces down to the divers who carefully placed them underwater.
"The divers were the riggers, fitters, welders and surveyors under water."
This innovative approach means the entire trash screen upgrade was able to be completed without draining the lake.
Hydro has worked closely with the local community throughout the upgrade process to ensure water continued to be available for drinking, farming and recreational use.
The installation took about six weeks.
