Tricia's Tree to honour giant icon in heart of Perth Zoo

  • Towering tree named in honour of Tricia the Asian elephant
  • Final resting place revealed for matriarch of Perth Zoo
  • Elephant guard hut to be built in Sumatra to ensure her legacy lives on

Perth Zoo will remember beloved Tricia the elephant with a towering Jacaranda tree named in her honour.

The 15-metre tree has stood proudly for four decades and has been chosen as the matriarch's final resting place.

'Tricia's Tree' is in the heart of Perth Zoo situated on the Main Lawn. It has special significance being one of the 65-year-old's favourite places as she regularly walked the grounds. It also stands on the site of the original elephant exhibit.

The Asian elephant celebrated many birthdays beneath the tree surrounded by the adoring public.

Tricia's ashes will be placed under her tree in a private ceremony with zoo staff. A plaque will also be unveiled.

The generous people of Perth have raised more than $60,000 for Tricia's Tribute to Conservation Fund. Part of the donations will go towards 'Tricia's Hut', a permanent conservation legacy in Sumatra. The elephant ranger guard post will protect one of the last remaining herds of wild Sumatran elephants. It will also provide accommodation for up to 16 rangers working round-the-clock to safeguard the animals from poaching and other illegal activity.

As stated by Environment Minister Reece Whitby:

"Tricia captured the hearts of Perth, and it's fitting that her final resting place will be in the heart of Perth Zoo.

"The size and scale of Tricia's Tree makes it a prominent feature and a perfect tribute for such a giant icon.

"Tricia's Tree will brighten Perth Zoo for many years to come, just like Tricia did as an ambassador for wildlife."
