I am deeply shocked and saddened by news that Colombian presidential candidate and senator Miguel Uribe Turbay has died some two months after being shot during a campaign rally in the capital, Bogotá, on 7 June.
While investigations are continuing into the motive and responsibility for the attack on Uribe Turbay, his death is a stark reminder of the importance that Colombia's upcoming elections be conducted with respect for the lives of all, free from violence and in a climate that allows for safe and inclusive participation. It is vital that the election campaigning can take place without being overshadowed and disrupted by violent, discriminatory or stigmatising speech.
My office in Colombia will continue to offer technical assistance to the Colombian authorities and civil society to work towards respect for the human rights of all, within an election context and beyond.
