Two People Proceeded Against During Total Fire Ban

Two people are being proceeded against for lighting fires during a Total Fire Ban in Southern Tasmania.

A 13-year-old will be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act, as police investigate a suspicious fire in Cygnet yesterday.

Tasmania Fire Service crews quickly extinguished the fire, which was reported about 5:30pm.

The fire started in grassland at the rear of the residence and caused significant damage to a campervan located in the backyard.

Separately, a 67-year-old man will be proceeded against after emergency services received multiple Triple Zero (000) calls today, in relation to a fire burning on the side of the Channel Highway at Margate.

A quick response from the property owner and fire crews meant it was quickly contained to a small area and extinguished.

A Total Fire Ban remains in place in Southern Tasmania until 2am Saturday.

Members of the public are asked to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious behaviour, or smoke activity to Triple Zero (000) immediately.
