Two people rescued after catamaran runs aground on reef

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has coordinated the rescue of two people this morning after their catamaran ran aground overnight on Bougainville Reef in Far North Queensland.
The catamaran ran aground at about 5am local time this morning, 200km northeast of Cairns.
The couple activated their emergency position indication radio beacon (EPIRB), alerting AMSA to their situation.
AMSA tasked its Challenger search and rescue jet from Cairns to locate the couple and the Queensland Government Rescue helicopter 510 from Cairns to winch them to safety.
The couple has been taken ashore for medical examination however they have no reported injuries.
This morning's rescue is another example of how distress beacons like EPIRBs can help save lives at sea.
Queensland authorities have been notified of the incident and the location of the catamaran.
