Two teenagers die after boating crash near Tamworth

Two teenage girls have died following a boating incident in the state's north east yesterday.

About 5pm (Tuesday 27 December 2022) emergency services were called to a caravan park on Ski Gardens Road in Rushes Creek – about 60km north-west of Tamworth – following reports of a boating crash.

On arrival, officers attached to Oxley Police District were told two teenagers – aged 13 and 14 – being towed behind the boat on an inflatable had struck a tree stump.

Members of the public performed CPR before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived; however, they could not be revived.

The driver of the boat – a 72-year-old man – was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

A crime scene was established, which was examined by specialist forensic police, and the boat and other items relevant to the investigation were seized.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has commenced, with assistance from the Marine Area Command.

Reports will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
