UCSF Health has earned The Joint Commission's Advanced Certification in Spine Surgery for the high standards of care it offers to patients throughout Northern California at the UCSF Spine Center.
The certification reflects over a decade of collaboration by UCSF's departments of neurological surgery and orthopaedic surgery, working closely with the UCSF Department of Quality & Safety. Multidisciplinary teams across clinics, operating rooms, and inpatient units aligned their practices around evidence-based care pathways and measurable outcomes in quality, safety, and patient experience. The process for receiving the certification from The Joint Commission took more than two years.
For patients, the certification means spine surgery at UCSF follows a consistent, team-based approach - from the first consultation through recovery. Every patient receives structured preoperative education, coordinated hospital care, and follow-up that tracks recovery and outcomes.
To earn the certification, UCSF met national standards set by The Joint Commission, an independent nonprofit organization that accredits health care organizations nationwide. The program, developed in collaboration with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, requires hospitals to follow evidence-based clinical guidelines and standardize clinical pathways across the continuum of care. Participation is voluntary.
UCSF also participates in the American Spine Registry, a national quality improvement registry. The Spine Center collects and reviews detailed data on surgical site infection rates, new neurological deficits, unplanned return visits to the operating room, and patient-reported outcomes before and after surgery. Care teams regularly analyze these data to identify opportunities to strengthen care and improve patient safety.
"This certification underscores UCSF's commitment to delivering safe, reliable, high-quality care across every step of the patient journey," said Amy Lu, MD, UCSF chief quality officer and vice president. "Our clinical teams voluntarily pursued this advanced designation as a reflection of the outstanding care that our patients receive here at UCSF. This designation means we are committed to holding ourselves accountable to clinical excellence and ensuring every patient undergoing spine surgery at UCSF benefits from coordinated, evidence-based care."
What this means for patients
Spine surgery can be complex, and many patients have other medical conditions that must be carefully managed. As part of the certification process, UCSF strengthened its preoperative evaluation and optimization to ensure patients are medically prepared for surgery. Patients receive dedicated spine education - through classes or one-on-one instruction - so they understand what to expect before, during, and after their procedure.
The UCSF Spine Center is built around collaboration between neurosurgery and orthopaedic surgery, which both treat spinal conditions. Surgeons with these specialties regularly review complex cases together and agree on best practices. Care also involves anesthesiologists, pain specialists, rehabilitation teams, and nurse educators to ensure a smooth, consistent experience for patients.
"This recognition highlights the strength of our partnership across specialties and our shared commitment to advancing spine care," said Edward F. Chang, MD, chair of the UCSF Department of Neurological Surgery. "At UCSF, we bring together surgical expertise, research innovation, and coordinated clinical care to ensure patients benefit from the most current science and a truly multidisciplinary approach to treatment."
A regional leader in spine care
The UCSF Spine Center serves patients from across Northern California and the Western U.S. As a regional referral hub, the program treats both common spine conditions and highly complex cases, including spinal deformities and tumors.
The certification is the result of a multi-year effort of preparation, process redesign, and collaboration among clinical and operational teams. It reflects agreement across departments on shared care standards, consistent patient education, formal performance reviews, participation in national quality registries, and public reporting of outcomes.
"As an academic medical center, we have a responsibility not only to provide exceptional care, but to continually evaluate and improve how we deliver it," said C. Benjamin Ma, MD, chair of the UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. "This certification affirms our commitment to standardized, data-driven spine care and to serving patients across the region with the highest level of expertise and accountability."
The Advanced Certification in Spine Surgery currently applies to UCSF Medical Center at Parnassus Heights.
