UN Regional Body To Advise Actions To Tackle Poverty

Ministers, senior policymakers and experts are gathering to explore ways to alleviate poverty, strengthen social protection systems, respond to population ageing and invest in the care economy.

Convened by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the ninth session of the Committee on Social Development (CSD9) will examine how countries can better coordinate social policies to address emerging challenges, build more resilient societies and ensure that the benefits of development reach everyone.

The session will feature the launch of Social Outlook for Asia and the Pacific 2026: Eradicating Poverty and Empowering People. The report examines poverty trends across the region, shows how poverty goes beyond a lack of income and encompasses multiple forms of deprivation, such as poor housing, inadequate sanitation and limited access to education. It highlights the need for coordinated investment in human capital, social protection, decent work and the social and solidarity economy to address these challenges and reduce inequality.

The Committee will also provide an opportunity for member States to renew their commitment to the Action Plan to Strengthen Regional Cooperation on Social Protection in Asia and the Pacific and the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, including the preparations for the Fifth Review and Appraisal. Representatives from countries will also share national experiences and policies to address poverty in all its forms and dimensions and discuss ways to advance regional cooperation on comprehensive, inclusive and resilient care systems.
