Unauthorised Fires, Moreton District

Police have charged a man following multiple vegetation fires in Morayfield on Monday, 14 September.

At approximately 6.45pm, police were called to the Bruce Highway near the Buchanan Road off ramp after smoke from a nearby grassfire began to impact traffic in three of the four southbound lanes.

Emergency services quickly extinguished that fire, before two more fires ignited nearby.

Both fires were also extinguished a short time later.

Following subsequent investigations, a 56-yearold Morayfield man was arrested at the scene.

He has been charged with one count of lighting an unauthorised fire and is due to face Caboolture Magistrates Court on 12 October.

Moreton District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Liam Pham said with the start of bushfire season in the district, it's a timely reminder of the dangers of lighting fires.

"We got lucky with the wind direction as it was blowing towards the highway. While it caused some traffic disruptions for several hours, it prevented the blaze from spreading further and endangering lives," he said.

Detectives from Redcliffe Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) are also investigating a separate vegetation fire that occurred on Herclues Road in Kippa Ring about 1.20pm on 15 September.

Initial enquiries indicate a witness saw a man running from the direction of the fire.

The man is described as Caucasian with blonde hair wearing a dark shirt and shorts, and was last seen on Anzac Avenue around 1.50pm

Police are appealing to the man, anyone who was in the area at the time or anyone who may have relevant dashcam vision or CCTV to come forward.
