The UNC Department of Psychiatry seeks female teens with depression, suicidal thoughts, or thoughts of self harm for a study seeking to understand the influence of the menstrual cycle and associated hormones on female teens' stress responses and mood systems.
Biologically female teens who are 14 - 19 years of age, have regular menstrual cycles, and who have experienced depression, suicidal thoughts or who have thoughts of or engage in self-harm are eligible.
For participation in the study, parents and their teen would have an initial visit involving interviews and questionnaires. Following the interview visit, the teen would then have two lab visits, during which they will watch a video, engage in a mental task, and provide saliva samples and dried blood spots, via finger prick, before and after the mental task.
In addition to the in-person visits, the teen would complete daily and weekly surveys via smartphone and provide urine samples via home urine test strips.
Involved teens may earn up to $570 for participation in this study.
