UNESCO Chief Denounces Abdoul Aziz Djibrilla's Murder in Mali

Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of Abdoul Aziz Djibrilla in Mali on 7 November 2023.

I condemn the killing of Abdoul Aziz Djibrilla. I call on all actors to ensure journalists and media workers can safely undertake their vital work to inform populations. The perpetrators of this crime must be prosecuted.

Abdoul Aziz Djibrilla was a radio presenter for Naata Radio in Labbezanga. He was killed by unidentified gunmen while travelling with colleagues in Gao in northern Mali. Two other journalists were kidnapped during the attack while the another was injured.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
