University of Melbourne Excels in Eight Subjects

The University of Melbourne is ranked in the top 50 globally for eight broad subject areas in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject.

The University placed in the top 100 globally for the remaining three broad subject areas, highlighting the University's depth and breadth of academic excellence.

The rankings include eighth in the world for Law and top 20 positions for Education Studies (16th), Psychology (19th) and Medical and Health (20th).

Business and Economics rose eight places to 32nd globally, while Life Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Engineering and Physical Sciences also moved upwards.

University of Melbourne Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane Gunn said the results reflect the University's ongoing commitment to delivering exceptional education and transformational research across the full breadth of our disciplines.

The rankings assess universities across the 11 broad disciplines of Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Computer Science, Education Studies, Engineering, Law, Life Sciences, Medical and Health, Physical Sciences, Psychology, and Social Sciences.

Institutions are assessed on several indicators, including teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook.

The University of Melbourne is recognised by Times Higher Education as Australia's leading university for higher education and research and is the Australian university with the most broad subject areas in the global top 20.
