A busy intersection in Allenstown is getting traffic signals thanks to funding from the Australian Government's Blackspot Program.
The traffic signals, which will be installed at the intersection of Upper Dawson Road and Caroline Street, will be a welcome addition for road users.
Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said the new signals will help improve traffic flow at the busy intersection and improve safety for pedestrians and motorists.
"Traffic signals at this intersection have been a long time coming and will go a long way to making the area a lot safer," Mayor Williams said.
"This intersection has traffic from the local shopping centre, school, childcare centre, medical centre as well as a number of other businesses and homes. As you would expect, the intersection can be quite busy at times, particularly during school drop off and pick up times.
"Thanks to a $676,000 investment from the Australian Government, we will be installing traffic signals, right turning lanes on Upper Dawson Road, signalised pedestrian crossings with new pram ramps on all sides, as well as new kerb and channel, asphalt surfacing, and line marking."
Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry said that she was pleased to see the installation of traffic signals at the intersection of Upper Dawson Road and Caroline Street.
"I lobbied very hard and was ultimately successful at securing $676,000 from the Australian Government's Blackspot Program for this intersection," Ms Landry said.
"Road crashes are a major cost to Australians every year. Black Spot projects target those road locations where crashes are occurring.
"I would like to thank Mayor Tony Williams and Rockhampton Regional Council for working constructively with the Federal Government."
Works will commence this week and are estimated to take approximately 16 working weeks to complete. Upper Dawson Road will remain open for the majority of the work under speed and parking restrictions. Caroline Street will have road closures at times during the construction phase.
