From November 13-17, 2023, Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Lee Satterfield will travel to Paris, France to join the United States' delegation to the UNESCO General Conference. Assistant Secretary Satterfield's participation in the UNESCO General Conference augments Assistant Secretary Michelle Sison's travel as head of delegation, as the United States continues the process of rejoining UNESCO and underscores the United States' commitment to protecting and preserving cultural heritage, promoting more equitable access to education, and supporting the sciences through robust international engagement. In addition to the UNESCO General Conference, Assistant Secretary Satterfield will engage key stakeholders and partners in education, sports, and exchange alumni participants. While in Paris, Assistant Secretary Satterfield will deliver remarks to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Fulbright Program in France and will participate in meetings with the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee to highlight the United States' elevated commitment to use sports as a diplomatic tool in the lead up to both the 2024 Summer Olympic Games and the 2028 Summer Olympic Games, which will be held in Los Angeles. The Assistant Secretary's trip emphasizes the United States' strategic engagement in people-to-people diplomacy, which goes beyond the confines of government to meet people where they are to promote peace and democracy, as well as support broader U.S. foreign policy goals to expand access to education, economic equity, and societal opportunity and inclusion.
