Vehicles seized - Jabiru

Northern Territory Police have seized two vehicles after they were used to transport liquor into alcohol protected areas.

Around 6:00pm on Thursday 13 August, police conducted a traffic apprehension on a vehicle on Arnhem Highway, Jabiru, after it was detected travelling at 186km/h in a 130km/h zone.

Police searched the vehicle and seized:

  • 2x 30 pack of beer
  • 2 litres of wine
  • 4 litres of spirits
  • 4x 700ml of spirits

The 28-year-old male driver was issued a noticed to appear in Maningrida Local Court on 1 September 2020 for:

  • drive a motor vehicle while unlicensed
  • drive at a speed and manner dangerous
  • bring liquor in alcohol protected area.

The vehicle was seized under provisions of the Liquor Act 2019 yesterday.

In a separate incident, police conducted a traffic apprehension on a vehicle on Arnhem Highway, Mt Bundy, around 10:00pm on Saturday 15 August 2020.

Police searched the vehicle and seized;

  • 1x 1.75 litre spirits
  • 2x 700 ml spirits
  • 27 cans of beer
  • 30.1 gm of cannabis

A 29-year-old female passenger was issued a notice to appear in Oenpelli Local Court on 23 September 2020 for bring liquor into alcohol protected area.

Police seized the vehicle under the provisions of the Liquor Act 2019 yesterday.

Northern Division Superintendent Brendan Muldoon said, "Police are committed to reducing the flow of alcohol into remote communities. If you attempt to take alcohol into an alcohol protected area, your car may be seized under the Liquor Act 2019. Every time police seize alcohol which is bound for remote communities it significantly decreases the likelihood and impact of domestic and community violence."
