The Government of Viet Nam has approved a landmark national programme to advance sustainable business practices across the country's private sector, marking a significant policy milestone that the ILO has supported.
Decision No. 926/QD-TTg, officially signed on 25 May 2026, establishes the Programme to Support Sustainable Business (2026-2030). The Programme sets out a comprehensive framework to promote the growth of a responsible and resilient private sector - one that balances economic efficiency, social responsibility, and environmental stewardship, in alignment with Viet Nam's commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals and its Net Zero target by 2050.
The Programme targets support for approximately 25,000 enterprises, household businesses, and cooperatives in transitioning to sustainable business practices, while developing at least 20 exemplary sustainable business models. Priority areas include capacity building, digital and green transformation, ESG frameworks, circular economy models, access to finance, innovation, and public-private partnerships for sustainable development.
The ILO's Productivity Ecosystem for Decent Work project, implemented with the financial support of the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), have contributed technical inputs, facilitated policy discussions and consultations, and shared international experiences throughout the formulation process. The project engaged relevant ministries, business associations, enterprises, and development partners to support evidence-informed discussions and alignment with international good practices.
"Sustainable enterprises are at the heart of decent work," said Gulmira Asanbaeva, Project Manager of ILO's Productivity Ecosystems for Decent Work project in Viet Nam. "This Programme creates a strong enabling environment for businesses to grow in ways that are productive, inclusive, and environmentally responsible, and that is good for workers, enterprises, and Viet Nam's economy as a whole."
The approval of this Programme reflects Viet Nam's commitment to embedding sustainability at the core of its enterprise development agenda and represents a concrete step toward the ILO's vision of a future of work that leaves no one behind.
