Volunteer Track Rangers Offer Conservation Experience

Parks Victoria

In an era where practical experience is increasingly vital for launching a career in environmental management, Parks Victoria's Volunteer Track Ranger program offers participants a unique opportunity to gain real-world skills while contributing to the preservation of Victoria's natural landscapes.

The program invites volunteers to assist rangers with track maintenance, habitat monitoring, and conservation projects across Victoria's parks and reserves.

For university students and early-career professionals, it serves as a valuable bridge between classroom theory and on-ground practice.

At a recent Volunteer Track Ranger event in Wattle Park, Judith Richard was volunteering for the first time.

Studying conservation and ecosystem management at university, Judith said she put her hand up to volunteer as a way of gaining first-hand knowledge and experience of what it's like working in parks.

"It shows you what is involved in the day-to-day of a ranger, and that first-hand experience is really valuable," Judith said.

"In my course, our teachers have said environmental volunteering is valuable work experience, whether it's with a citizen science program like WaterWatch, a local group, or Parks Victoria."

Participation provides tangible examples for resumes, portfolios, and job interviews, demonstrating initiative, teamwork, and applied knowledge in areas such as biodiversity conservation, sustainable land management, and public engagement.

The program's accessibility also makes it particularly appealing. Many opportunities are out in some of the most popular national parks in Victoria, but a growing number of Volunteer Track Ranger events are being held in urban parks, like Wattle Park.

"It's fantastic there's volunteer opportunities like this close to home that don't require too much travel," Judith added.
