It will also advise on engaging appropriately with Aboriginal people before data is shared under the PRIS legislation for purposes that may affect Aboriginal people and communities, and on protecting sensitive Aboriginal information.

The members appointed to the new PRIS Advisory Committee will serve a three-year term with the first meeting scheduled for May 2026.

As stated by Science and Innovation Minister Stephen Dawson:

"The appointment of the inaugural Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing Advisory Committee is an important step in ensuring government data is used safely, responsibly and for the benefit of the community.

"The Committee brings together a diverse mix of expertise in privacy, data governance and responsible information sharing to support the implementation of the PRIS legislation."

"The establishment of the Committee is timely, with the main operational provisions of the Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing Act 2024 commencing operation on 1 July and the mandatory data breach notification scheme starting on 1 January next year."
