WA Hospitals Set Elective Surgery Record

  • A record 4,145 elective surgery admissions made in just one week
  • Admissions for week ending 22 June were 11 per cent higher than the 18-month average
  • Elective surgery success due to co-ordinated effort across WA hospitals

Western Australia's health system has just recorded its highest-ever number of elective surgery admissions in the space of one week.

There were 4,145 elective surgery admissions for the week ending 22 June, surpassing the previous records set in the weeks of 8 December 2024 (4,135) and 3 March 2025 (4,113).

The Cook Labor Government has prioritised driving down the post-pandemic elective surgery waitlist through a significant co-ordinated effort with WA hospitals.

By delivering more weekend and twilight procedures, the WA health system continues to break State records.

As a result of necessary pandemic-related pauses to elective surgeries at WA hospitals, the elective surgery waitlist peaked at 33,206 in May 2022.

Despite rapid population growth, and the demands of an ageing population with more acute health needs, the waitlist continues to decrease, currently sitting at 28,996.

The number of patients considered to be waiting beyond the recommended time frame for their surgery has also fallen 21 per cent since January last year.

As stated by Health Minister Meredith Hammat:

"This government has been focused on driving down the elective surgery waitlist, and we are delivering.

"Our coordinated effort across our hospitals is working, breaking our own elective surgery record three times in the space of 7 months.

"There's still work to do, and the Cook Labor Government will keep working with our hospitals to reduce the elective surgery waitlist and deliver the world-class healthcare Western Australians expect."
