WA man charged after loaded, shortened firearm with silencer seized in vehicle stop at Cobar

A Western Australian has been remanded in custody after appearing in Court today, after being found by police allegedly in possession of a shortened firearm in a vehicle stop in the Central West of NSW.

About 10.30pm yesterday (Thursday 16 July 2020), police stopped and spoke with the occupants of a Western Australian-registered Jeep 4WD, on the Barrier Highway at Cobar.

The driver, a 37-year-old man from Spencer Park in Western Australia, was subjected to a random drug test, which allegedly returned a positive reading for methylamphetamine.

He was placed under arrest and a further search of the Jeep revealed a quantity of methylamphetamine, buprenophrine, cannabis and cash.

Police also allegedly located a loaded, shortened .243 calibre rifle fitted with a silencer in the vehicle along with ammunition.

The man was taken to Cobar Police Station where he was charged with possess shortened firearm, possess unauthorised firearm, receive property stolen outside NSW, not keep firearm safe, possess ammunition without a licence, possess prohibited drug (3 counts) and supply prohibited drug.

The man was refused bail to appear at Bourke Local Court today, where he was formally refused bail, to appear at the same Court on Monday 20 July 2020.

A female passenger in the car, an 18-year-old woman, was charged with possess prohibited drug (two counts). She will appear at Cobar Local Court on Wednesday 26 August 2020.
