Western Australia will strengthen its border controls with other States and Territories from 6pm tonight (Sunday, June 27).
The Northern Territory, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory will join Victoria in being classified as 'low risk' jurisdictions.
This means all arrivals from these jurisdictions must self-quarantine for 14 days and be tested for COVID-19 on arrival (within 48 hours) and on day 11.
The border changes have been triggered by a concerning increase in COVID-19 infections in other States and Territories.
The current hard border with New South Wales remains in effect. Only travellers who have been granted an exemption are able to enter WA.
Western Australia's border arrangements with South Australia and Tasmania have not changed at this point but the situation is being closely monitored.
The new border changes follow the implementation of new restrictions for people in the Perth and Peel regions after WA recorded one new case of COVID-19 in the community overnight in relation to New South Wales travel.
The restrictions came into effect at 12pm today and will apply for a minimum period of three days. More information is available at https://www.wa.gov.au
As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:
"Today's changes to our border arrangements are a safe and sensible response to the alarming outbreaks we're seeing over east.
"I understand some people may be frustrated but the safety of Western Australians is paramount and we must do everything we can to minimise the risk of COVID-19 spreading in our community and damaging our economy.
"Our thoughts are with our fellow Australians in other States and Territories and we hope the increase in infections is arrested soon.
"Throughout the pandemic the Western Australian community has proven to be resilient, disciplined and understanding, and I'd urge everyone to keep following the health advice that has proven so helpful in minimising the impact the virus is having on our State."
As stated by Health Minister Roger Cook:
"Today's border changes and restrictions are based on the latest health advice.
"We will continue to monitor the situation around the country and adjust our border controls if necessary.
"I'd like to thank all Western Australians who've been following the restrictions and I ask everyone to please keep ensuring they use the SafeWA app, which is one of our strongest weapons in the fight against this killer virus."
