The WA Rheumatic Heart Disease Strategic Framework 2026-2036 (PDF 4.3MB) has been released, setting out a coordinated statewide approach to eliminate new cases of rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in Western Australia by 2036.
Although rheumatic heart disease is preventable, it continues to have a significant impact on the health and wellbeing of many Western Australians and remains a major cause of serious illness and premature death.
The Strategic Framework aligns with the national RHD Endgame Strategy, which aims to eliminate rheumatic heart disease in Australia through action across 5 priority areas:
- Aboriginal leadership
- Community-based programs
- Healthy environments
- Early prevention
- Care and support
Developed in partnership with stakeholders across the health sector and community, the Strategic Framework provides a roadmap for clinicians, researchers, service providers and communities to work together to improve prevention, strengthen access to equitable care and support better health outcomes.
A strong focus on Aboriginal leadership and community-led action recognises the importance of culturally safe, locally informed approaches to preventing and managing the disease.
The Department of Health acknowledges and thanks the many organisations and individuals who contributed to the development of the Framework, including Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services, clinicians, researchers, government agencies and community representatives.
Their expertise, experience and commitment have helped shape a practical and evidence-based strategy that will support measurable progress towards eliminating new cases of rheumatic heart disease while ensuring people living with the condition continue to receive high-quality care and support.
