Western Australia has launched the most comprehensive FluMist program in the country, giving families access to a free, needle‑free influenza vaccine for children aged 2 to 11 years.
With 130,000 doses of the intranasal vaccine now available across the state, FluMist is a simple and painless alternative to traditional influenza (flu) vaccinations.
The vaccine is given as a quick spray into the nose making it a good option for children who may feel anxious about needles. FluMist is safe and effective and protects against influenza A and B just as well as standard flu injections.
Eligible children can receive FluMist through a wide range of providers, including community health clinics, general practices, Aboriginal Medical Services and pharmacies throughout WA, making it easy for families in both metropolitan and regional areas to access.
The program aims to increase vaccination rates in young children and help reduce the spread of flu in the community during winter.
While often underestimated, the flu can cause serious illness in children, including hospitalisation, even among those who are otherwise healthy. Improving vaccination rates helps protect children and reduce pressure on the health system during peak flu season.
