Wallace Collection Board Welcomes Seven New Trustees

Marcus Agius CBE

Appointed for a 4 year term which commenced on 22 January 2024.

Educated at the universities of Cambridge and Harvard, Marcus worked as a banker for 40 years, first at Lazard LLC (Group Deputy Chairman and chairman of Lazard in London) and subsequently at Barclays plc (Group Chairman). He was chairman of the British Bankers Association. More recently he was chairman of BAA plc and PA Consulting and the Senior Independent Director on the Executive Board of the British Broadcasting Corporation.

In the not-for-profit sector, Marcus was, for 10 years, chairman of the trustees of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew as well as for 15 years being chairman of the Kew Foundation, its philanthropic arm. He was chairman of Plants at Cambridge for more than a decade. He is chairman of the trustees of Reach South Academy Trust and a member of the Science Museum Advisory Board. He is chairman of the development board for the Rare Dementia Support Centre and co-chairs the Wallace Collection Development Committee. He is a senior advisor to The Mentoring Foundation and chairman of the board of Exbury Gardens.

Spencer de Grey CBE

Appointed for a 5 year term which commenced on 22 January 2024.

Spencer de Grey studied architecture at Cambridge University under Sir Leslie Martin. Following four years working on a new Middle School at the London Borough of Merton, he joined Foster Associates in 1973 and now has a design overview for all Foster + Partners' projects as joint Head of Design. He has overseen a broad range of projects, including the Great Court at the British Museum, Glasshouse International Centre for Music (formerly the Sage Gateshead), the Great Glasshouse at the Botanic Garden of Wales and the reworking of Trafalgar Square.

In Europe, he was responsible for the Commerzbank HQ in Frankfurt, and Narbo Via Museum in the South of France. He has also been responsible for a number of cultural projects in the US including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Winspear Opera House in Dallas and the Kogod Courtyard at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC.

He was awarded a CBE in 1997, elected an Academician of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2009 and has served as a trustee at The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and The Building Centre, subsequently becoming its chairman. He was appointed visiting professor of Architecture at Cambridge University from 2010 to 2020.

Josephine Fitzalan-Howard

Appointed for a 5 year term which commenced on 22 January 2024.

Josephine has over 35 years experience in the art world, having worked in the Old Master Paintings department at Sotheby's for a decade where she was a director and auctioneer. She was a director of international dealers Colnaghi and then Bernheimer whilst regularly appearing as a picture specialist on the BBC Antiques Roadshow. She founded JFH Fine Art Consultancy in 1994 advising private clients on both selling and buying of paintings.

Josephine has had considerable experience in fundraising through her role as a trustee and vice president of the national children's disability charity, HemiHelp (now part of Contact), founding the 'Children Helping Children' concerts at Cadogan Hall and as a member of the Royal Opera House Foundation Advisory Committee. She is currently an Ambassador for the National Opera Studio.

Larry Keith

Appointed for a 5 year term which commenced on 22 January 2024.

Larry Keith studied painting conservation at the Hamilton Kerr Institute, University of Cambridge. He then held internship positions at the studio of Herbert Lank and at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, where he studied with John Brealey. He joined the National Gallery Conservation Department in 1991, and has headed the Conservation department since 2010.

He has published extensively on painting conservation and technique in the Gallery's Technical Bulletin and elsewhere, and has made major contributions to the catalogues of the Gallery's exhibitions on Velázquez, Leonardo da Vinci, and Artemisia Gentileschi. He is an external examiner for the post-graduate painting conservation courses at the Courtauld Institute, and has been a member of advisory committees for important restoration projects at various international institutions including the Rijksmuseum and the Louvre.

Jakyung Moon Lambert

Appointed for a 5 year term which commenced on 22 January 2024.

Jakyung Moon Lambert was born in Seoul, Korea in 1957 and is a Korean national.

She spent most of her childhood in Europe and studied in the UK from the age of thirteen. She has a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics BA/ MA Oxon.

She was an investment banker covering France and Belgium for 8 years and finished her banking career at Credit Suisse First Boston in 1988. Since then, she has worked pro bono for a number of charities including as Chair of the Development Board of St Hugh's College, Oxford.

In 2020, she founded a new charity which she also chairs, Tutor The Nation, which supports education by providing online tutoring to children in areas of rural isolation and urban deprivation.

She is an Honorary Fellow of St Hugh's College, Oxford, and a Distinguished Friend of the University of Oxford. She is married with two children.

Alexandra Shulman CBE

Appointed for a 4 year term which commenced on 22 January 2024.

Alexandra Shulman attended St. Paul's Girls' School and gained a BA in Social Anthropology from Sussex University.

She became the first female editor of a monthly men's magazine when GQ launched in the UK in 1990. In 1992 she became Editor-in-Chief of British Vogue where she stayed for 25 years leaving in June 2017. During that time the sales of the magazine both domestically and internationally reached a record high.

In 2007 she was awarded an OBE for services to fashion journalism and in 2018 a CBE for services to magazines

She has written two novels and a diary of the Centenary year preparations for British Vogue. Her most recent book Clothes … .and other things that matter was published in Spring 2020 and was a Sunday Times Bestseller. She also wrote the introduction to Elizabeth II - Queen, Princess Icon - published by the NPG in 2022.

She is a journalist known as a commentator on female leadership, fashion, and contemporary style and culture.

She was a Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery for eight years, and a Trustee of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity for eight years. She is a Vice President of The London Library.

Davinder Toor

Appointed for a 4 year term which commenced on 22 January 2024.

Davinder Toor is a leading figure among a new generation of Sikh, Indian & Islamic art collectors. The Toor Collection, comprising more than 1500 works, acts as a lasting legacy to the empire of the Sikhs.

He has acted as a consultant to major institutions such as the British Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Wallace Collection. He currently lectures on the 'Arts of the Royal Sikh Courts' and 'Sikh Painting and Manuscripts' for the Victoria & Albert Museum's prestigious 'Arts of Asia' course. Davinder is currently guest curating the exhibition titled Ranjit Singh: Sikh, Warrior, King at the Wallace Collection which runs from 10 Apr-20 Oct 2024. When not collecting Sikh art he runs his own pharmaceutical services business.

Remuneration and Governance Code

Trustees of The Wallace Collection are not remunerated. This appointment has been made in accordance with the Cabinet Office's Governance Code on Public Appointments.

The appointments process is regulated by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. Under the Code, any significant political activity undertaken by an appointee in the last five years must be declared. This is defined as including holding office, public speaking, making a recordable donation, or candidature for election. None of the new Trustees have declared any significant political activity.
