A man wanted for domestic violence-related offences has been arrested after allegedly deliberately ramming a police vehicle in Sydney's south-west.
About 11.40am yesterday (Sunday 11 July 2021), officers from Burwood Police Area Command were called to a home at Canterbury, following reports a man, who was wanted for allegedly choking his ex-partner, was outside the property, sitting in his vehicle.
An officer from Georges River Highway Patrol spotted the man driving his BMW on Church Street, Canterbury, and activated warning lights on the fully marked police vehicle.
It's alleged the man deliberately drove the BMW at speed toward the Highway Patrol car, crashing into it and causing extensive damage.
The man then ran from the car with the police officer giving chase to a nearby park, where the man was arrested with the assistance of members of the community and following a short struggle.
During a subsequent search of the man's vehicle, police allegedly located a tomahawk and a large kitchen knife.
The 57-year-old man was taken to Burwood Police Station, where he was charged with the outstanding warrant for common assault (DV) and intentionally choke etc person without consent (DV).
He was also charged with two counts of attempt stalk/intimidate intend fear of harm (domestic), enter prescribed premises of any person without lawful excuse, negligent driving, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, resist officer in execution of duty, two counts of custody of knife in public place, and destroy or damage property.
The Campsie man was refused bail to appear at Burwood Local Court today (Monday 12 July 2021).
The man was also issued a $1000 Penalty Infringement Notice for fail to comply with noticed direction 7/8/9 COVID-19.
