WA's Flagship Bike Riding Celebration Gets Funding

  • WA Bike Month grant applications now open
  • Record funding of $75,000 available to be shared among local governments, organisations and community groups to host bike riding events
  • State Government investment of $347 million in walking and riding infrastructure is making active travel more accessible than ever before

Grant applications for this year's WA Bike Month are now open.

Taking place annually in October, WA Bike Month aims to promote and encourage people of all ages and abilities to ride bikes for transport, fun and for a healthier lifestyle.

This year, the Department of Transport has partnered with the Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia (RAC WA), with RAC contributing an additional $25,000 to increase total grant funding from $50,000 to $75,000.

The record funding amount is available to be split between local governments, workplaces, schools, bike groups and community organisations to host events that support and inspire people to give bike riding a go.

Three grant categories are on offer:

  • major - up to $7,000 for large-scale events (between 100 and 500 people) that are open to the public;
  • local - up to $2,000 for medium-scale events (between 50 and 100 people) that are open to the public; and
  • minor - up to $500 for small-scale events for a limited audience.

This grants program is one of several ways the State Government is helping more people to choose active travel more often as part of their everyday journeys. It complements the $9.6 million invested into the WA Bicycle Network over the next two years, which will see the delivery of 47 new projects, comprising approximately 38 kilometres of paths and other infrastructure.

WA Bike Month is an initiative of the State Government, co-funded by the Department of Transport and RAC, and administered by WestCycle.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"Our Government's investment in walking and riding infrastructure is making active travel more accessible than ever before.

"WA Bike Month continues to be a valued initiative across our State, encouraging people of all ages and abilities to give bike riding a go.

"We always see a great uptake of these grants, and it's fantastic that this year we are partnering with the RAC to enable more local groups, organisations and schools to take advantage of this opportunity and get their local community members moving and using the bicycle network."
