Waste Management Top Priority Amid Rising Costs

Waste disposal media release

The City continues to prioritise waste disposal, waste collection and recycling as part of the 2026/27 budget despite a tough global environment.

As well as upgrading and expanding facilities, the City will continue to offer subsidised bulky kerbside services and free recycling and green waste disposal at our Waste and Recycling Centres.

Mayor Tom Tate said a $15 million investment to upgrade the Pimpama Waste and Recycling Centre to be a premium full-service site was a key project in this space.

"This is an investment in our growing northern corridors. Pimpama will become one of our premier centres catering to all commercial and residential customers in all categories," Mayor Tate said.

However, with the State Government Waste Levy set to cost ratepayers a record $12.5 million this year, it had become unsustainable for the City to absorb expenses for all services when some were only accessed by a small percentage of residents.

"Waste disposal is expensive and so we have resolved to adopt a user-pay model for some of our services to ensure a fair and equitable system for all," Mayor Tate said.

"The $5 gate fee for landfill at Waste and Recycling Centres will begin on July 1. This does not apply to recycling and green waste disposal, which remains free."

"We will also be introducing a $50 service fee for the City's on-demand bulky kerbside "FLEXiSKiP" service, he said.

"This fee is only about 15% of what the retail cost for this kind of service is. We are covering the rest.

"We know availability has been a key concern for our residents and this co-contribution model will help us meet the demands of the service"

A preorder option from 17 June 2026 will enable residents to submit their request to receive a FLEXiSKiP from July.
