NT Health Watch out for leptospirosis this wet season

Watch out for leptospirosis this wet season.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by the bacteria Leptospira.

Leptospirosis is a potentially life-threatening bacterial infection spread through water, mud and soil that is contaminated by the urine of infected wild animals (e.g. pigs, rats, cattle).

Cuts or grazes in the skin or splashes to the eyes, nose and mouth are common transmission routes.

Increased risk of infection is associated with exposure to infected animals (veterinarians, cattle workers) or contaminated environments (hunting, mustering, bushwalking).

In the NT, there are about 10 cases each year. There have been 7 reported cases this year.

Two cases have been notified in the last month, with both requiring hospitalisation.

Leptospirosis symptoms may include:

Sudden fever with headacheSevere muscle pain (particularly legs and lower back)ChillsRed, sore or bloodshot eyesDiarrhoea and vomiting

If you develop these symptoms, please go to your nearest clinic or hospital for urgent treatment.

Prevention includes:

Avoid wading into potentially contaminated waterCover cuts and wounds with waterproof dressingsWear boots, gloves and protective clothingWash with soap and water after contact with animals, carcasses, mud or contaminated water
