- Water Corporation's pioneering research and development program celebrates 25 years
- Around 600 projects supported and more than $110 million investment

A pioneering research and development program that has fostered hundreds of innovative water-saving solutions across Western Australia is celebrating a major milestone.
For 25 years, Water Corporation's Research and Development Program has driven innovation, investing over $110 million in projects that help WA adapt to climate change, protect the environment, and deliver reliable water services.
This includes advancements in water and wastewater treatment, resource recovery technologies, and strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Many of these innovations were developed at the Water Research and Innovation Precinct (WRIP) in Shenton Park. Since opening in 2018, WRIP has assessed 191 projects, completed 52, and currently hosts 21 active trials.
To mark National Water Week, Water Minister Don Punch toured the Shenton Park facility to gain firsthand insight into the pioneering innovations being developed to advance water sustainability and resilience
Each year, Water Corporation supports 60 to 100 research projects in collaboration with universities, research institutions, and industry.
Recent initiatives include producing green ammonia and hydrogen from wastewater, using freshwater mussels to improve drainage water quality, and trialling biofilm membranes to support nutrient breakdown.
Other projects have explored community-led water and energy strategies in Aboriginal communities and how Aboriginal water knowledge is passed across generations - highlighting the deep cultural connection to water.
There are also plans for another facility in Perth's northern suburbs. The Alkimos Research Learning and Optimisation Hub is set to open in 2028, positioning WA as a national centre for innovation in desalination and advanced water treatment.
Water Corporation has been recognised for its leadership in sustainable water management in the face of climate change. It was the first in Australia to introduce large-scale desalination (2006) and groundwater replenishment (2017).
Its research and development strategy will now target seven key areas, including resilient infrastructure, regenerative systems, net-zero emissions, and long-term water security.
As stated by Water Minister Don Punch:

"Water Corporation invests around $4.5 million each year in research and development, helping Western Australia adapt to climate change, protect the environment, and deliver safe, reliable water services.
"I want congratulate Water Corporation for its vision and leadership in sustainable water management - from pioneering large-scale desalination to advancing groundwater replenishment to secure our water future.
"Water is one of our most precious resources, and it's vital we use it wisely."
