Weekly Weather: Rain In North, More Settled In South

BOM
Hello from the Bureau, with your weekly weather wrap for Sunday the 8th of March.

The active monsoon continues across the tropical north of Australia, rounding out another week of heavy falls and flooding.

For the remainder of Sunday, more of the same is forecast, mainly targeting Queensland, northern parts of the Northern Territory, and the Kimberley in Western Australia. In Queensland, the risk of heavy falls extends across central and eastern districts, with both flash and riverine flooding a concern.

Mostly settled elsewhere across the country today, broadly dry and sunny for Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia, scattered showers and isolated storms in eastern New South Wales. Across southern Western Australia, dry weather and elevated fire dangers are expected along the south coast.

On Monday, generally settled conditions continue in the south as a high-pressure system moves over the Bight. Showers and storms persist through eastern New South Wales, while rain, heavy falls and flooding remain likely across much of Queensland and the Top End.

By Tuesday, the heavy rain risk eases through south-east Queensland, though showers linger, tending to monsoonal wet weather further north. In the south-west of the country, a weak cold front will cool conditions across the South West Land Division and bring a few showers to the south coast. The front will drive a burst of heat eastwards, lifting temperatures across South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, and New South Wales.

Wednesday will see the front crossing the south-east, bringing the warmest day of the week to many areas, and a smattering of showers, but generally low rainfall totals are forecast.

Showers may become more widespread through the east on Thursday, depending on how much moisture can be drawn in from the north. At this stage, only low rainfall totals are forecast for inland New South Wales and south-west Queensland.

Friday and into next weekend, showers linger across parts of the southern and eastern Australian coastlines, with more widespread rain and storms continuing in the tropical north.

That's it for this week, see you next time.
