- Western Australia cements position as nation's top-performing economy in CommSec's State of the States report for the fifth consecutive quarter
- WA outranks all other states and territories on household spending, housing finance, dwelling starts and equipment spending
- State also leads the nation in economic momentum propelled by strong population growth
The WA Labor Government's strong budget management, commitment to economic diversification, jobs and housing is continuing to deliver results, with WA once again named the top-performing economy in the nation in CommSec's latest State of the States report.
The report ranks each state and territory across eight economic indicators, comparing current results with longer-run averages, with WA leading the nation in economic performance for the fifth consecutive quarter.
The State ranked first on four of the eight economic indicators, including:
- Household spending, which was 14.8 per cent higher than the five-year average in the June quarter 2025. WA also led the nation in annual growth of household spending, up 5.2 per cent compared to the June quarter 2024;
- Housing finance, with the value of owner-occupier home loans (excluding refinancing) in WA 42.5 per cent above the long-term average;
- Dwelling starts at 24.8 per cent above the decade average. WA has taken the lead on dwelling starts, lifting from second spot and 17.9 per cent higher than the decade average in the last report; and
- Equipment investment was 32.9 per cent higher than the decade average in the June quarter, far outpacing all other states. WA was the only state or territory to record growth in equipment investment since the June quarter 2024, up 11.4 per cent.
Western Australia has moved up the ranks to second place in the amount of construction work completed, which has risen 16.6 per cent above the decade average.
WA continues to see the strongest annual population growth, at 2.3 per cent, with its latest population 30.6 per cent higher than the decade average.
The report also ranks economic momentum of the states and territories over the past year, with WA recording the strongest growth in economic momentum across the country.
The WA Labor Government's commitment to developing a skilled and productive workforce was also highlighted, with employment 14.6 per cent higher than the decade average and WA recording the fastest annual wages growth at 3.7 per cent.
The CommSec State of the States report comes off the back of WA's 2024-25 Annual Report on State Finances released last month, in which the State recorded its seventh consecutive operating surplus and record-breaking investment in infrastructure.
As stated by Acting Premier and Treasurer Rita Saffioti:
"Since the last report, WA has taken the lead on dwelling starts, showing our Government's efforts to boost housing supply are delivering for Western Australians.
"This report confirms WA's overall economic performance remains the strongest in the nation, enabling us to continue to invest in the services and infrastructure Western Australians need.
"WA has held firm to the top spot for a full year, showing our Government's strong financial management and focus on economic diversification is driving real, sustained results.
"With the strongest overall population growth in the country, we are continuing to invest in the industries and jobs of the future, so WA remains the economic powerhouse of the nation."
