Residents can now access their local library at the touch of a button, with Western Downs Regional Council launching a new mobile app to boost convenience and link locals with a range of new and interactive features.

The free Western Downs Libraries mobile app is now available to download onto all Apple and Android devices, offering a new digital experience for book lovers and beyond.

Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said the new app allowed residents to explore their local library anywhere, anytime.

"The new Western Downs Libraries app offers residents the convenience of being able to access everything that's great about their local library while they're on the go, or even from the comfort of their own home," Cr Maguire said.

"The app allows you to explore the entire catalogue and reserve titles, discover what's new and what's trending, access the hottest eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines, and online resources, check out what's happening at local libraries, and register for library events.

"One of the fantastic new features allows you to scan the barcode of any book to see if our libraries hold the title, and if not, residents are able to make a request for it to be added to the catalogue and reserve a copy via the app.

"You can also get directions to your local library branch, register for a range of library programs or events, and be notified when your reservation has arrived for pick-up."

Cr Maguire said Western Downs Libraries offered a range of digital programs and equipment to spark learning and creativity for all ages and interests.

"Libraries are no longer just a place to borrow books - they're vibrant community hubs that offer a space for residents to meet, connect, learn something new, or explore their creativity, she said.

"Residents have access to a range of programs such as 24/7 online learning resources, face-to-face tech help, and digital support programs for all ages and abilities.

"We also have a high-tech MADE Lab at Dalby Library offering the latest in digital innovation including a 3d printer, high-powered gaming computers, and a suite of creative software and applications for residents to use.

''With over 56,000 items available to loan across our branches and online, and over 7,000 digital resources issued in the past three months alone, it's clear our residents are embracing digital access, and we're excited to do the same."

The free Western Downs Libraries app is available for download via iTunes or Google Play.
