What happened with Creso's water?

Kempsey Shire Council

G'day Crescent Head community,

We just wanted to give a big shout-out to everyone for being so awesome during the recent 'boil water' incident on Friday 24 February.

And we wanted to let you know what went down.

Around 10:20 am Friday, we discovered that the water distribution system supplied from Back Beach Reservoir had low chlorine levels. We checked the reservoir and found the same issue.

We quickly checked the Water Treatment Plant and identified an electrical problem with the chlorination system.

As soon as we realised that a 'critical control point' in the Crescent Head Drinking Water Management System had been breached, we contacted NSW Health for guidance.

We followed NSW Health's advice and issued a Boiled Water Advisory notice, so everyone was aware and could take the necessary precautions.

We manually dosed Back Beach Reservoir with chlorine and flushed the entire distribution network from top to bottom to get rid of any low-chlorine water.

By 8pm that evening, the flushing was complete. Then we had to sit tight and wait for the test results to be confirmed by an independent accredited lab.

Fortunately, we received good news on Sunday afternoon. The system was given the all-clear after testing for E.coli and Total Coliforms, so NSW Health gave us approval to lift the Boiled Water Advisory notice. Hooray!

We just wanted to say a huge thanks to everyone for being so patient and cooperative during this time.

We know it may have been a bit of an inconvenience, but we were all in it together. Your health and safety are our top priority, and we're committed to ensuring our water supply meets the highest standards.

That's why Council is currently working through approvals with the NSW Government to deliver the new Crescent Head Water Treatment Plant.

So thanks again, and let's all give ourselves a pat on the back for handling this so well.
