Wheels falling off Tasmanian economy 30 October 2023

Yet another report has shown that the wheels are falling off the Tasmanian economy, just like they are falling off the Government in charge of managing it.

The latest CommSec State of the States report released today shows Tasmania has plummeted down the national economic rankings to sixth place.

This is more bad news for the state's economy, which after 10 years of a Liberal Government has also seen state final demand go backwards for three quarters in a row, with the highest unemployment rate in the nation.

The CommSec report shows Tasmania was the only state to record a negative annual growth rate, which at -0.7 per cent is well behind the national average of 3.3 per cent.

Tasmania also had the weakest job market of any state, with the slowest job growth.

The report also shows that people are voting with their feet about the state of the economy.

Tasmania recorded the weakest population growth, which at 0.42% was the worst result for Tasmania in around seven years.

It has been clear for some time that Tasmania has been facing economic headwinds, yet the Rockliff minority government is so fixated on internal brawls and resignations that the wheels are falling off the State's economy, debt is ballooning to $5.6 billion and the state has run out of energy.

This is devasting news for Tasmanian households and businesses, but it's no coincidence that with a government in disarray, the economy is following suit.
