Winter rain boost to SEQ dams prompts safety warning

Minister for Regional Development and Manufacturing and Minister for Water The Honourable Glenn Butcher

Lake Clarendon, in the state's south east, has opened to paddle craft and fishing activities for the first time in more than five years, following continued rainfall during winter filling Queensland dams.

Minister for Water Glenn Butcher said the SEQ water grid was nearly 90 per cent full and 12 south east Queensland dams were spilling, with many others close to full.

"Our dams and lakes don't only serve as critical sources of water supply, especially when they're this full," the Minister said.

"They are also at the centre of tourism for a number of Queensland communities and one of the reasons why we have such a great lifestyle in the sunshine state.

"As the weather starts to warm up again, I have no doubt plenty of people will be getting back out on the water to swim, ski, paddle and fish in our full dams, so it's incredibly timely to remind Queenslanders to be vigilant when it comes to safety out on the water.

"The fact so many dams saw so much water earlier this year and filled up means what's beneath the surface might have changed, or can't be seen, and people need to be careful of that."

Minister Butcher also reminded people that the usual rules around driving under the influence of alcohol, which includes watercraft, apply.

"Seqwater rangers and compliance officers, as well as Queensland Police, regularly patrol various sites to ensure rules are being followed," he said.

"It's fantastic to see Queenslanders getting out and enjoying these state-owned water assets and making the most of the south east lifestyle, but we want to make sure everyone gets home safely, too.

The following tips can help with preparedness for recreational activities, on top of life jackets and appropriate equipment:

  • Only swim in designated swimming areas at lakes where it is permitted
  • Make sure your children are supervised at all times
  • Check Seqwater's recreation and safety notices before you leave for the latest information on conditions and closures
  • Read our fact sheets on swimming, boating and multi-use trails
  • Check the weather at www.bom.gov.au.
