A range of works have been undertaken to inform tender documents
Council is preparing tender documents for the design and construction of the Wollongong City Centre Skate Park and is excited to be delivering a new facility that our community has asked for over many years.
Council considered four potential locations within MacCabe Park as part of a detailed site selection process before identifying East MacCabe Park (Site 2) as the preferred location.
Identified advantages of the site included adequate space for a regional-scale facility, good natural surveillance, limited impacts on existing parking, connecting and footpath infrastructure, setback from residential properties, and distance from the Wollongong War Memorial and associated commemoration activities.
The proposal to build the skatepark in the lower east of MacCabe Park received overwhelming community support through the public exhibition process, with feedback identifying the location as convenient and family friendly, with the potential to activate a currently under-utilised section of the park. Following the public exhibition period, this location was endorsed by Council in December 2025.
Acting on this resolution, Council staff have engaged and undertaken a range of works to develop the tender documents for final design and construction, including site investigations, service locations, connections and preliminary geotechnical assessments, all of which have been completed for the specific site. Design and construction of the skate park is programmed for delivery within the current financial year.
Prior investigations for potential CBD locations included the current car park site within MacCabe Park, which is closer to residential properties, and substantially closer to the War Memorial and expected expansion of events and public gatherings in the centred areas of the park in the future.
Council has started the demolition of the vacant Pioneer Hall on the eastern side of the park, which will increase open space and improve sightlines and connection to the Cenotaph. The acquisition of all Keira Street properties adjoining the western edge of the park will also expand open space and provides clarity for the development of the MacCabe Park Masterplan due to begin within the current financial year.
