The voices of domestic violence victims will be heard loud and clear this Friday evening in Lake Mac as local support groups and services gather for the annual Reclaim the Night event.

Traditionally a march to give women a voice and reclaim the streets, this year's instalment will be a more static affair, with live entertainment, face painting and access to support services, starting at 5.30pm on the Warners Bay foreshore.

Services attending on the night include NOVA for Women, East Lakes Family Support Services, CALM, Got Ya Back Sista, What Was She Wearing Australia, Hearts and Hands Community Development, and Community Corrections.

Lake Macquarie City Council Coordinator Social and Community Planning Jess Salvador said the event would provide a safe and engaging space for conversations about consent and creating safer streets for women and children in the city.

"Crime statistics show that almost one in five Australian women have experienced domestic violence," she said.

"That's completely unacceptable, and we need to do everything we can to bring that number down. We also need to ensure the support services are there for when the worst happens."

According to peak representative group Domestic Violence NSW, there are about 2500 reports of domestic violence Statewide each month, but this likely represents only 40 per cent of actual incidents due to underreporting.

Friday's event is free and will run 5.30-7pm. Go to lakemac.nsw.gov.au
