St Albans residents can look forward to a new civic plaza that will continue the revitalisation of the popular Alfrieda St town centre.
Brimbank Mayor, Cr Georgina Papafotiou said work is set to begin on the $1.4 million civic plaza development which will become an important and valued community space for the people of St Albans.
'Following the success of the pop-up park set up in mid-2017, and calls from traders and residents for a civic plaza in Alfrieda Street, St Albans - Council is thrilled to now offer a permanent solution.
'Once completed, this project will turn the former bus interchange in Alfrieda Street into a vibrant and welcoming space for the community to share in events, and for people to socialise and relax while shopping.
'The result will be a multi-use civic space in the centre of St Albans - providing an area for larger cultural events and a safer space for social gatherings.
'The project will also include new road surfacing and feature paving to footpaths, large shade trees and garden landscaping to create a cooler environment, improved seating, picnic tables and better lighting, safer pedestrian crossing, signage and traffic signals.
'The project is a win for residents and ensures that St Albans continues to be a place where people want to live, work and socialise,' Cr Papafotiou said.
Temporary road closures will be required during construction. Drivers and pedestrians are urged to look out for and follow detour signs. Access to shops, businesses and residences will be maintained throughout construction.
Work will begin late February 2020, and is expected to finish end of June 2020.
The civic plaza development will be funded through Council's 2019/2020 capital works budget. The project has also received $125,000 from the Level Crossing Removal Authority.
