Work has started on cycling improvements to the West Tamar Highway, which will improve safety, reduce traffic congestion and offer travellers a healthy alternative to driving.
The Tasmanian Liberal Government has committed $1.5 million to improve cycling facilities and cycling safety on the West Tamar Highway between Launceston and Legana as part of the West Tamar Highway Priority Projects.
Improvement works will take place along approximately 10 kilometres between Margaret Street, Launceston, and Legana Park Road, Legana. They include surfacing repairs, increased space on road shoulders, line marking adjustments, warning signs, head start boxes at signal-controlled intersections where possible and shoulder widening.
Work is expected to be completed by late December, weather permitting.
Strong support for improved cycling facilities in the area was identified during the West Tamar Corridor Study consultation, with feedback providing valuable insights into what improvements the community wanted.
The improved cycling facilities will promote active transport, which provides health and environmental benefits, as well as reducing congestion by providing an alternative to driving.
