A group of 20 postgraduate students from across the School of Politics and Economics took part in the two-day workshop, which was hosted by the BBC Monitoring team at New Broadcasting House in London.

As part of the workshop, held in November, students attended an editorial meeting, were given a website demonstration and enjoyed talks delivered by working journalists on the Monitoring team. The team tracks, translates, summarises and analyses local media sources to make sense of what is happening on the ground around the world.

Aisling, an MA European Studies student, said: "I really enjoyed discussing disinformation as I feel like I learnt a lot about what has been going on in this field. Although we are aware of the dangers of disinformation, I didn't realise the extent to which it is taking hold of all aspects of news media - the journalist from this department was very interesting."

MA Public Policy student, Nisat said: "The talk with the Middle East team and the tour of the BBC building were my highlights, as it gave me an exposure about the process used to make the news, and how it is made on the ground."

And Ruth, who is studying for an MA in International Political Economy, added: "I most enjoyed the opportunity to hear from the researchers and journalists from each team in person, specifically the Russia team and the disinformation teams. It was so interesting to learn about how they undertake their roles on a day-to-day basis, how they found themselves in their roles and what keeps them motivated to continue their invaluable work."
