World Dental Congress 2021 will now be staged as a world-class virtual event

It has been announced that the 2021 World Dental Congress, which was awarded to Australia in 2017 by the Fédération dentaire internationale (FDI or World Dental Federation), will be staged virtually from September 26th - 29th, showcasing a world-class virtual program and exhibition, featuring big-name international and home-grown talent.

The event, known officially as the ADA FDI 2021 World Dental Congress – Special Edition, will be live, on-demand, and worldwide, supported by an extensive virtual exhibition and networking opportunities, bringing the global dental community together to share ideas, knowledge, and experiences.

The fully virtual and hosted event will encompass over 200 Scientific Programme sessions and it is expected that between 6000 to 8000 delegates will participate from Australia and throughout the world.

Dr Mark Hutton, President of the Australian Dental Association (ADA), which is hosting the World Congress, is promising that it will be an event "unlike anything dentists or their practice teams have experienced before

The change from a physical event to a virtual only one has been prompted by the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic which has made the staging of major events around the world highly problematic, resulting in either the cancelation of many of them or their move to an online environment.

The decision to hold the 2021 World Dental Congress virtually was the result, in part, of obvious limitations around international (and occasionally, domestic) travel which has meant many expected visitors from around the world would not be able to attend in person.

The Australian Dental Association has negotiated with FDI to deliver a more traditional, full-format, face-to-face World Dental Congress in 2023 to be hosted at the International Convention Centre in Sydney.

"The online event will be a fantastic opportunity for us to show the world what we're capable of in anticipation of a full-scale event in a couple of years' time," says Dr Hutton.
