This World Ozone Day we celebrate the science and action of healing our atmosphere.
Forty years ago the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer united 198 nations around a single goal: to research, monitor, and act against human activities that harm our planet's natural sunscreen.
In 1987, the Montreal Protocol built on the Vienna Convention by phasing out 99% of ozone-depleting substances worldwide.
Continuous monitoring shows the ozone layer is healing and is on track to recover within this century.
Many ozone-depleting chemicals are also potent greenhouse gases. Cutting them has slowed climate warming significantly.
We support the science behind healing our ozone in many ways.
- Australian scientists contribute important research to international work.
- We partner with CSIRO to report on atmospheric levels and emissions of Synthetic Greenhouse Gases in Australia and worldwide.
- We regulate and monitor the use and distribution of harmful greenhouse gases.
Every little bit helps. So, what can you do to play a part?
Check if your air conditioner is leaking, it could be releasing harmful gases and raising your power bill.
A well-maintained system can cut energy costs by up to 30% - saving households hundreds of dollars each year.
On World Ozone Day, let's celebrate our progress and keep the momentum going!
Protect our planet and your wallet. If your air con isn't working, keep a cool head - just Look for the Tick.
