Moira Shire Council has completed two major upgrade projects at Yarrawonga Aerodrome in the past six months.
The first project widened the taxiway to provide safer movement of aircraft and better access to the hangars. It also added a new designated walkway for increased pedestrian safety. This was completed just before Christmas.
The second project was completed in late February and involved the resurfacing of the runway, a vital upgrade that needs to be done every 10 to 15 years.
Moira Shire Council Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson PSM said the Yarrawonga Aerodrome was an important facility for the Shire.
"This is the only airport in Moira and it supports a passionate local aviation community, and is highly regarded by local pilots and fly-in visitors," Dr Emonson said.
"With these two projects, Council has made a significant investment into the future use of the aerodrome."
Yarrawonga Aerodrome has two runways - surfaced and unsurfaced. The unsurfaced runway was kept open for pilots while the surfaced runway was worked on.
Council staff patched and prepped the 25,000 square metres of runway, before contractors Airport Consultancy Group resprayed the surface with a special bituminous product.
This was covered with a layer of stone, and specialised runway rollers made the new surface smooth. Finally, new lines were marked.
"We've been delighted to receive positive feedback from locals and visitors about the quality of the resurfacing works and the overall facility since the works were finished," Dr Emonson said.
"As other regional airports struggle to remain open, we are pleased to continue our support for the Yarrawonga Aerodrome."
These projects were funded by the Federal Government's Regional Airport Program and delivered by Moira Shire Council.
