Young Writers Awards Presented at Swan Hill Library

Young Writers

The Swan Hill Regional Library proudly celebrated the 10th anniversary of its annual Young Writers Award on 28 October, with more than 130 people attending to recognise the creativity and achievements of our region's talented young authors.

Now in its tenth year, the Young Writers Award is one of the library's key literacy programs, encouraging young people to explore their creativity, develop their writing skills and showcase their storytelling talents.

This year, participants were challenged to write a short story inspired by the theme 'When the Door Opened', with entries judged across seven age-based categories, alongside a multiclass category and a People's Choice Award. For the first time, awards for the winner of best handwriting for each group in the Primary School category was also included.

Swan Hill Rural City Council Mayor, Cr Stuart King, congratulated all participants, particularly those whose stories were shortlisted, received commendations or took out awards in their respective categories.

"The standard of writing was once again outstanding, highlighting the incredible imagination, creativity and storytelling talent of young people across our region.

"It's wonderful to see so many young writers embracing the opportunity to share their stories, and we congratulate everyone who took part in this year's competition," Cr King said.

Cr King presented young writers with certificates of achievement and prizes, including notebooks, pens and gift cards, recognising their efforts and accomplishments.

Council also gratefully acknowledges the generous support of this year's sponsors: Bakker & Glen, Beck Legal, Murray Mallee Training Company, Murray Valley Technology Centre, Swan Hill Hire, Whitfield Excavations and Youth Inc.

Their continued support helps make this valuable opportunity possible for aspiring young writers across our region.

All shortlisted stories are available to view on the Swan Hill Regional Library's Facebook page or in person at the Swan Hill Library.
