Recreational boating facilities across regional Western Australia will receive a share of more than $2.4 million in State Government grants for upgrades to improve safety for users.
Seven projects spanning Wickham in the Pilbara to Peaceful Bay near Denmark, have secured funding in the latest round of the Recreational Boating Facilities Scheme managed by the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI).
The funding will be spent on major boat ramp and jetty upgrades, with the City of Karratha receiving $750,000 toward a new two-lane boat ramp and finger jetty at Wickham following design work and significant planning.
The Shire of Shark Bay received $728,070 to assist with the replacement of the jetty at the Monkey Mia boat ramp in recognition of its high use servicing the northern Shark Bay Peninsula.
The Shire of Murray was allocated $721,257 towards the replacement of the Batavia Quays Boat Ramp at South Yunderup and installation of a new floating jetty to improve launch efficiency at the busy facility.
Planning grants were allocated to the Shire of Coorow ($11,250) for investigations at Leeman Boat Ramp to improve launching and the Shire of Exmouth ($89,985) to guide future works at the Bundegi Boat Ramp.
The Shire of Exmouth also received $73,470 for work to install two new fish cleaning stations at Exmouth Boat Harbour and a new toilet block will be built at Peaceful Bay with a grant of $79,608 allocated to the Shire of Denmark.
The grant program is part of the Cook Government's commitment to delivering quality infrastructure for Western Australians, no matter where they live.
Boating facility managers can apply to DTMI for grants covering up to 75 per cent of the estimated cost of a project, up to $750,000.
Applications can be made for the planning, construction or upgrade of boat launching ramps, jetties, moorings, and new channels that are directly related to a public boating facility.
Eligible land-based infrastructure at public boating facilities includes trailer parking, toilets, lighting, and signage. Visit DTMI's website for a list of the grants and more information.
As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
"Our government recognises the important role of local boating facility managers in the delivery of high-quality facilities for recreational boat owners right across WA.
"Now in its 30th round, the Recreational Boating Facilities Scheme has delivered improvements at public boating facilities along our State's coast which are servicing WA's 100,000 boat owners.
"Boat owners also do their part, contributing to the scheme when they pay their boat registration fees, giving back to the community in the process.
"Funding improvements to local recreational boating facilities is part of our government's commitment to delivering quality infrastructure for our regional communities so Western Australians can continue to enjoy our beautiful coast."
As stated by Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:
"The Cook Government is proud to be delivering improvements to recreational boating facilities across the Pilbara and Gascoyne regions as part of this funding boost.
"It's important our boaties have access to quality facilities so they can safely enjoy our regional coastline.
"These improvements will not only deliver benefits for locals but the many visitors to our regions who support our local businesses, tourism operators and our economy."
