2021 Bendigo Venues & Events season launch

The City of Greater Bendigo's 2021 performing arts program was announced during a launch event at Ulumbarra Theatre on Sunday, with tickets to all shows going on sale today.

The extensive program of arts and entertainment will feature Bangarra Dance Theatre, Opera Australia, Bell Shakespeare and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, among many other musical, circus, comedy, opera and drama performances throughout the year.

Despite the impacts of COVID-19 on the Australian performing arts industry, the 2021 Season curated by Bendigo Venues & Events is extensive and diverse.

Bendigo's own Arena Theatre Company will bring its award-winning original production of Robot Song back to Bendigo and will also premiere a new work, Baai (Home), in October at Ulumbarra Theatre.

Other highlights include a performance in March from renowned guitarists The Grigoryan Brothers, who presented a surprise guest performance and sample of their show at Sunday's launch, as well as legendary singer-songwriter Archie Roach sharing his life story in Tell Me Why.

Bendigo Venues & Events Acting Manager Jacoba Kelly said the 2021 Season announcement was a positive sign of performing arts returning to Bendigo and venues reopening, albeit with restricted numbers in the audience.

"After an incredibly challenging year, we are excited to be in a position to reopen our venues and present a range of wonderful performances for our community," Ms Kelly said.

"The major touring companies are coming back to Bendigo with new work but we also have some boutique and niche Australian works that will delight audiences, including Margaret Fulton - The Musical and the talented Damian Callinan in Newk - The John Newcombe Story.

"To be in a position, at this time, to announce our Season program and theatres reopening is great news for our community, but equally positive for our local schools and community theatre groups who have performances and events booked in our spaces during 2021.

"We are excited to see our venues reopen and contribute to the recovery of our community from COVID-19 and also continue to add to the vibrancy and culture of our community."
