2022 Queen's Birthday Honours recognise health leaders, athletes and volunteers

Premier and Minister for the Olympics The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk

119 Queenslanders have been named in the 2022 Queen's Birthday Honours List – acknowledged for their outstanding service and inspiring achievements in Queensland, Australia and abroad.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk congratulated the latest recipients, whose wide-ranging contributions stretch from the grass courts of Wimbledon, to the halls of Parliament, and beyond.

"Following Her Majesty The Queen's historic Platinum Jubilee last week, earning a place on this year's Queen's Birthday Honours List will no doubt have extra significance for the 119 Queensland recipients," the Premier said.

"The latest honourees include dedicated health leaders and public servants, gifted athletes and authors, passionate advocates for veterans and people with a disability, and tireless community volunteers.

"Importantly, all were nominated by members of the public and I'm delighted their service, talent, loyalty and perseverance has been recognised with a place in the 2022 Queen's Birthday Honours."

Two Queenslanders were appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC), recognising the highest degree in service to Australia – philanthropist Gina Fairfax, and former Chief Health Officer and our current Governor of Queensland, Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young PSM.

Her Excellency the Governor is one of six Queenslanders who received an additional commendation in the Queen's Birthday Honours List, acknowledged in the COVID-19 Honour Roll for their contribution, service or achievement relating to the pandemic.

"Through COVID-19, and throughout her 16 years as Queensland's Chief Health Officer, Her Excellency led our health system with confidence and common sense, and gratefully, continues to serve our people, as the 27th Governor of Queensland," the Premier said.

"I'm also pleased to see Gina Fairfax recognised as one of Australia's greatest philanthropists and charity leaders, whose generosity and advocacy has enriched our regions and encouraged the growth of our unique arts sector."

Homegrown tennis champion Ash Barty was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for her achievements both on and off the court, including her contributions to indigenous tennis and youth development programs.

23 Queenslanders were appointed Members of the Order of Australia (AM), including former Minister in the Beattie and Bligh Governments, and long-serving Member for Mackay, the late Tim Mulherin.

"This honour is a richly deserved acknowledgement of Tim's unparalleled service to his community and to our state," the Premier said.

"It recognises the enormous regard in which he was held by everyone he met across the political divide.

"As a friend who knew his great heart for people, and a colleague who saw his extraordinary commitment and achievements, I can say that no-one is more worthy of such an award."

Surf Life Saving Queensland Life Member and volunteer Lenore Grice, Prince Charles Hospital Foundation CEO Michael Hornby, and disability advocate, the late Matt McCracken, were among 51 Queenslanders awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division.
