I'm sure you're aware that our Shire now has a Youth Council- a wonderful group of students who have stepped up to represent the views of themselves and their peers. Together with our Youth Worker Gemma, they have set their focus on some important projects.

One of those is public transport, and especially the bus network. They want to build a campaign that supports better transport services for all our communities, particularly the important links between Maryborough and our smaller communities.

As a licensed driver and Maryborough resident, I admit I'm guilty of overlooking the importance of our local bus services, and I bet I'm not alone. Growing up in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, most days I caught a bus home from school, or to the local shopping centre to hang out with friends. Public transport was essential to an inclusive teen life. Our youth are often denied that flexibility and freedom, and their ability to get around is generally dependant on others. Being able to travel independently is key to their inclusion and involvement in our community.

The Youth Council are launching a community survey which seeks stories from community members about their experiences of public transport- even if you don't use it. These stories will help to demonstrate why public transport is essential to our community and why we need more services available.

To help out, please support our Youth Council and take the time to fill out the survey. Go to www.centralgoldfields.vic.gov.au/transportsurvey
