$3.5M Funding Pool Opens for Medical Research Grants

  • Research grants for WA researchers to tackle pressing health challenges
  • $3.5 million in new grant opportunities available to WA researchers
  • Grants available for the Preventative Health Fellowship and Innovations in Personalised Medicine Program

The Cook Government is taking another significant step towards advancing medical research and improving health outcomes for Western Australians with a $3.5 million co-funding partnership with The Hospital Research Foundation (THRF) Group.

Grants will be made available through two significant medical research funding opportunities made possible by a co-funding partnership between the Western Australian Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund and THRF Group.

The $1.75 million contribution from the FHRI Fund, matched by THRF Group, is delivered through the Fund's established Co-Funding Partnerships Program (Co-FPP).

The grant will be awarded through two key initiatives, the Preventative Health Fellowship and the Innovations in Personalised Medicine Program.

The Fellowships in Preventative Health for Priority Populations is currently accepting applications from early to mid-career researchers to address health outcomes for priority populations, such as regional and remote communities, Aboriginal populations, and culturally diverse communities across WA.

The Innovations in Personalised Medicine Program will open later in 2025 and will provide grants to advance precision treatments for cancer, cardiovascular disease and neurodegenerative conditions.

This new partnership will help WA researchers continue to deliver groundbreaking outcomes that improve health for all Western Australians.

Since its establishment in 2020, the FHRI Fund has awarded approximately $215 million in grants to over 655 recipients, driving health and medical research and innovation across the State.

As stated by Preventative Health Minister Sabine Winton:
