500 people in $1,000 cars are travelling from Hay, NSW to Adelaide, SA for Cancer research in March 2022

Box Rallies

After waiting for 2 years due to COVID, on Saturday 26th March 2022, 500 people in teams of 2, in cars worth less than $1,000 (aka shitboxes) will leave Hay, NSW to take part in Shitbox Rally. Seven days later, they will cross the finish line in Adelaide, SA having travelled over 3,200kms, successfully completing the largest independent fundraiser for Cancer Council nationally. With over $28.3 million raised since the rallies began, the $2 million target for this rally is well in sight with current fundraising totals at over $1.67 million.

James Freeman who founded Box Rallies (Shitbox and Mystery Box Rally) after losing both of his parents to cancer within 12 months of each other said: "Shitbox Rally is not a race, but a reward for fundraising efforts. This is a chance to explore Australia, drawing teams from around the country to help achieve the extraordinary. When having to postpone Shitbox Rally - Spring for another year I was totally fed up and knew the teams were too. For 2 years they had been waiting to rally. I wasn't prepared to wait another full year, so decided to do the Spring rally in March.

We can't stay with the original route (Mackay to Darwin) due to the wet season, so I had to come up with something else. This will be the first Shitbox to depart outside of a major city - definitely the first to start in a small country town. Every stop on this route is at a place I love and travels through some incredible places. Plus, a whopping 80% of the rally will be on unsealed roads. There are a lot of firsts for this rally which is amazing after 19 Shitbox Rallies done in the past. We're grateful for the hard work and support of the teams who take part and the communities who help them to fundraise." said James.

The impact of COVID in 2020 and 2021 has made it particularly difficult for teams to fundraise and Box Rallies has seen its expected fundraising total for the period, cut by as much as $7.2 million from Cancer Research. Rallies are the reward for raising vital funds for cancer research but when the reward is unable to take place, the fundraising slows considerably.
